It’s mission kimpossible

- BY JOHN CROSS AGG: 3-2

JOSHUA KIMMICH ended Arsenal’s Champions League dream and left their season in danger of implosion.

Kimmich headed a second-half winner to send Bayern Munich into the last four as the Gunners failed to fire.

That comes on top of their defeat to Aston Villa in the title race last Sunday.

They now have to try and lift themselves for Saturday’s crucial league trip to Wolves as a season which promised so much is suddenly in serious danger of following the same path as last year.

Bayern nearly took an early lead when Noussair Mazraoui’s cross shot flew just wide after deflecting off Ben White.

Arsenal survived though and their best chance of the night came in the 31st minute.

Martin Odegaard’s low ball into the box picked out Gabriel Martinelli but he fired straight at Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer.

Arsenal bossed the latter stages of the first half as Declan Rice dominated in midfield, Martinelli was dangerous in attack and Odegaard darted about all over the pitch.

But Bayern’s Leon Goretzka served warning of what was to come when his header hit the bar and Raphael Guerreiro then smashed the post.

Arsenal’s control was beginning to unravel – and it then fell apart.

Guerreiro’s cross split the Arsenal defence and Kimmich raced in to power a 63rd-minute header past David Raya and into the net.

Odegaard hit the side netting and Gabriel Jesus missed another opening as Arsenal tried to find a leveller – but it wasn’t to be. Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said: “It is a gutted dressing room.

“We were very close and the margin of error was zero – we made a mistake defending the box and we conceded a goal.”
