Boxing greats Josh Taylor and Amir support appeal to cover Scots hero’s funeral costs
A FUNDRAISER for boxer Willie Limond’s family has raised more than £10,000 after being backed by former world champions Josh Taylor and Amir Khan.
The former British and Commonwealth champion passed away in Monklands Hospital in Airdrie on Monday, nine days after suffering a suspected seizure in his car. The 45-yearold was due to take on Joe laws at Glasgow’s emirates Arena on May 3, which would have been the third time he had come out of retirement. Newcastle fighter laws set up a GofundMe appeal to give limond “the send-off he deserves” and to support his sons’ boxing careers. Taylor, 33, the former undisputed light welterweight champion of the world, donated £2000 to the fund, as did Khan, 37, who beat limond in a 2007 bout. Taylor, from Prestonpans in east lothian, said limond’s death was a “terrible loss” while former light welterweight world champion Khan described him as “a great champion and a great person”. launching the fundraiser, laws wrote: “listen, am no saint neither a charity worker or f***ing english teacher, my opponent Willie limond sadly passed away and i’m absolutely devastated. “He was a former world champion and just wanted to make a better life for his family.
“Can we all just give a couple quid for this great man to give him the send-off he deserves and any change over can go to his two boys as sponsorship for their boxing career.
“The limond name lives on, go make your old man proud.”
limond, who grew up in Garthamlock in the north-east of Glasgow, won 42 of his 48 fights, including 13 by knockout.
A statement from his boxing club read: “Willie was not only a legend of the sport but an infectious character who will be greatly missed.”
