STEVEN DAVIS hopes John Lundstram’s desire to win trophies will convince him to stay at Rangers.

The midfielder is out of contract in the summer and yet to agree a new deal with reports linking him heavily with Turkish giants Trabzonspor.

Gers boss Philippe Clement spoke openly about his wish to keep hold of the 30-year-old Scouser and talks between club and player have been ongoing throughout the season.

Davis spent two years playing alongside the midfielder in the Ibrox engine room before the Northern Ireland legend called it a day last summer.

And he reckons one thing Rangers can offer above other clubs is the chance to win silverware.

Davis said: “I don’t know what’s going to happen with Lunny.

“I know the manager has spoken about it and would like to keep him. Lunny enjoys being at the club with everything that brings.

“There’s been a couple of times with players when things happened pretty late. Connor Goldson’s contract extension is a good example.

“I don’t know what will happen but I do know Lunny has a determination to win trophies and win semi-finals and finals.

“When you think about the run to the Europa League Final, he was pivotal. Ultimately, when you leave Rangers, you want to be leaving having won a number of trophies.

“Winning things will be in his immediate thoughts.”

Davis’ last winners’ medal came after a Scottish Cup Final against Hearts two years ago.

His old club face the Jambos again tomorrow in the semi-final and, coming off the back of a damaging week that saw them take just one point from games against Ross County and Dundee, Davis knows a win at Hampden is crucial.

He said: “There is no hiding behind the fact those were massive blows.

“The manager would have been hoping for a reaction after Ross County in Dundee. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen but he has character and experience and understands the pressure that comes with being Rangers manager.

“Results have been hard to take in recent weeks but he will know this is a big semi-final and offers an opportunity for the team.

“They have to make sure they get a result and have to make sure they reach the final. If they win every game there is still an chance to put pressure on their opponents and try to get the league title as well.”
