3 Best wines from the High Street
2022 My Treasure Grauburgunder £7.99 at Lidl while stocks last
Among the less expensive options in the Lidl Wine Tour that started last week, this soft, appetising German pinot gris is my top choice white. Textured but gentle in style, it exhibits fresh greengage and peach flavours coupled with proportionate orange centred acidity counterbalanced by traces of slate savouriness.
2021 Best Barbera D’asti £7 – instead of £8.75 until 19 May - at Morrisons
Although giants like Barolo dominate north west italy’s red wine scene, let’s highlight instead that region’s barbera grape. its wines are cheaper and ready sooner than those powerful neighbours and it’s ideal for versatile summer drinking. Light bodied and smooth, this example has juicy raspberry and red cherry flavours supported by bold acidity (but only modest tannin) with suggestions of baking spice and, to provide dash of herbs, basil.
Corte Molino Prosecco £7.50 – instead of £8.50 until 14 May – at the Co-op
Much current prosecco is mundane, so it is pleasing to see this lovely awardwinning example not only available but at a keen price. With quite lazy bubbles but a surprisingly active mouthfeel, it delivers soft apple, pear and ripe melon flavours with sherbet acidity and carefully balanced creamy texture.
On-wine ShOpping 2022 Deux Grives Grande Reserve Marsanne Viognier Currently £8.75 at www.houseoftownend.com
Viognier and marsanne were once largely Northern Rhone features producing white wines there and sometimes joining red wine blends. Nowadays they appear far and wide but few new places do them as well as Languedoc (as this example testifies). Rich but not overly viscous, it displays ripe red apple and mango flavours supplemented by good acidity and an evolving minerality –º yet with touches of clove and honey too.
