TARTAN ARMY ON THE MARCH

30 pipers to lead fans on parade to Euros game against Swiss

- BY RYAN CARROLL

The Tartan Army have teamed up with German authorities to organise a march to our euro 2024 clash with Switzerland in Cologne next month.

The Scotland fan group have worked with the SFA, the host city team and local police to carefully plan the near 2km walk, which will be led by 30 bagpipers, to the crucial Group A match at RheinEnergieStadion on June 19.

It will start at the city’s Josef-Lammerting-Alle, and supporters have been told they can bring their own carry out as they soak up the atmosphere before the march starts – an hour-and-a-half before kick off.

Bagpipers and drummers have been urged to get involved as supporters look to create an atmosphere to remember in Cologne – and it’s understood it will be the only fan walk of this type during the group stages.

Organisers the Association of Tartan Army Clubs explained how the activity was planned, saying: “Munich was unworkable due to the location of the stadium, and the Stuttgart route offered we felt was too far, as it was 4.5 miles – taking 90 minutes to two hours.

“When we met with the police and host city team in Cologne, they presented us with this very workable option.”

Supporters were delighted when the fan group revealed the plans.

Alan Roberts said: “I’m getting emotional just reading this.”

Brian George Wood said: “This is gonna be epic – even better we beat the Germans.” Graeme Baxter, ATAC vice chair, told the Record: “Led by up to 30 Scottish bagpipers, we’ll be coming down the road.

“It’s a great opportunity for the Tartan Army to bring colour, noise and friendliness to the locals as we march through the streets of Cologne.

“Many fondly remember the 2007 march in Paris, and we’d encourage as many Scotland supporters as possible to join us for this one-off spectacle.

“We thank the host city for facilitating the fan walk and the local police for closing off the streets and ensuring our safety.”
