ARSENAL boss Arsene Wenger claims Granit Xhaka will make the Gunners’ midfield stronger than ever this season.

The Switzerlan­d ace met his new team-mates on Thursday just before they flew to France for a friendly with Lens on Friday night – a match which ended 1-1.

Xhaka, 23 (right) was a key man for Borussia Monchengla­dbach last term, scoring three goals in 36 games.

And if Wenger lands Leicester star Riyad Mahrez for £45million, the Frenchman will have an array of creative talent to choose from this season.

Wenger has come in for criticism from fans this summer after a lack of signings but was backed last week by chief executive Ivan Gazidis.

The Greek said: “It’s not just about spending money but about how you spend your money and doing it wisely.

“It is about having strong values within the club that players buy into and fans can be proud of.

“We’re making progress in what is a fiercely competitiv­e world, against competitor­s that have the capability to spend far more money than we do.

“We’re doing it by being very, very discipline­d.”

Arsenal spent £30m on Xhaka and Wenger said: “Granit brings his passing ability to play through the lines from deep positions, his work rate and he’s good in the air. “He’s young as well and there’s a lot to come from him.
