Let’s make it a double STENSON AFTER MORE

-

The ice-cool Swede, 40, put on a golfing masterclass to win The Open at Troon and is eager for further glory ahead of this week’s US PGA Championship.

Following his breakthrough victory, he said: “We’re only just getting started, aren’t we?

“You never know once you open the floodgates what may happen.

“I’m going to be out there trying my hardest.”

The first round of golf ’s final Major of the season begins at Baltusrol Golf Club, New Jersey, on Thursday and Stenson could be in for another famous battle TONY STENSON with Phil Mickelson by the time we get to Sunday night.

The American ended up with the fourth lowest score in Major history at Troon but could not get his hands on a second Claret Jug.

This week, though, he is back on happy hunting ground.

It was at Baltusrol 11 years ago that Lefty claimed his only PGA Championship and recent form indicates that he will be one of the contenders this week.

As well as his triumph at Troon, Stenson points to his win at the BMW International in Germany back in June as being key to his recent success.

He said: “The win in Germany a couple of weeks ago was huge, getting one over the finish line. You feel pressure with not having won for a while, that always kind of builds up, so it was great to get that win there.”

The Open champion has moved to No.5 in the world rankings and the battle for the No.1 spot will be on again t his week.

Jason Day tops the pile currently and is defending champion after his win at Whistling Straits last year.

Stenson will play the first two rounds with the Masters and US Open c h a mpions, Danny Willett and Dustin Johnson, in line with tradition.
