Danny joy as misfiring Millers are off mark
DANNY WARD’S first-half goal secured Rotherham’s first league win of the season.
The Millers winger beat the offside trap and produced a cool finish for the game’s only goal in the 32nd minute.
Izzy Brown had the first chance for the Millers but his shot was blocked by Ryan Woods.
The Bees responded with Lasse Vibe only inches away from opening the scoring from Maxime Colin’s cross.
Brown then robbed Vibe and found himself clean through but his side-footed effort was touched on to the bar by keeper Daniel Bentley.
Lewis Macleod curled an effort just over the bar at the other end but the game swung Rotherham’s way in the 32nd minute when Ward burst free from Scott Allan’s pass and slotted coolly past Bentley.
Scott Hogan threatened an equaliser early in the second half but his shot from Vibe’s ball was clawed out by Rotherham keeper Lee Camp.
Sam Saunders then had an effort diverted into the hands of Camp and Vibe set a header just over the bar.
Centre-back Kelvin Wilson made a number of crucial clearances as Rotherham were made to hold on. Jon Taylor could have made sure of the points in the dying stages but after a surging run his shot was deflected wide.
Rotherham boss Alan Stubbs praised his side’s character and said: “The mood was good anyway but this lifted the fans and club.
“We’ve had a difficult start in terms of who we’ve played but this was a really good result against a good team.”
Brentford boss Dean Smith said. “I can’t be displeased with our performance and the better team lost on the day.
“But that’s just football sometimes.”
