Experienced Ellison still keeps his cool

-

Veteran striker Kevin Ellison scored a poised finish in the 55th minute to down Yeovil and send Morecambe to the top of the table.

Crawley are up to second after they came from behind to take a point in a 1-1 draw at home to Barnet. John Akinde fired the Bees into an early lead but Crawley hauled themselves level after 67 minutes when Joe McNerney headed in.

There were first wins of the season for Portsmouth – for who Gary Roberts (below) scored twice and Notts County against Colchester and Hartlepool.

Notts County overcame an early goal from Colchester’s Toto Nsiala to win 2-1 with Louis Laing and Jon Stead scoring.

A fierce drive from Cameron McGeehan gave Luton a 15th-minute lead but Colchester levelled through Connor Hunte’s header before Matt Godden snatched a winner late on.

Alex Kiwomya gave Crewe a first-half lead at Newport with a stunning strike into the top corner but Sean Rigg snatched an 81st-minute equaliser.

Liam Kelly scored for Leyton Orient to set them on their way to a 2-1 win at Grimsby. Ollie Palmer doubled their lead before Dominic Vose grabbed a consolation in injury time.

Two first-half goals from Graham Carey earned Plymouth a 2-0 win against Mansfield while John Marquis scored the only goal as Doncaster held on for a 1-0 win at Cheltenham.

Three goals in six second-half minutes saw Exeter claim a 2-1 win at Accrington. A superb long-range strike from Ryan Harley gave Exeter a 66th-minute lead but Accrington were level four minutes later when Arron Davies swept home. Jake Taylor scored the winner in the 72nd minute with a volley.

Cambridge find themselves bottom of the table after they were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Carlisle. Leon Legge powered home a header to give the U’s an early lead but Carlisle levelled through Jason Kennedy. Luke Berry put the home side back in front from the penalty spot, only for Charlie Wyke to stab in another equaliser.

Blackpool and Wycombe played out a goalless draw.

Both sides created chances in the first half, most notably two one-on-ones in quick succession for Sheffield Wednesday forward Fernando Forestieri.

The frontman, back in the team after controversially refusing to play at Norwich last week amid transfer speculation, was left wanting for goals despite a good performance.

He was first put through by a lucky deflection off Leeds defender Charlie Taylor, but rolled his shot just wide of the righthand upright.

Moments later, Forestieri went clear again, but Leeds captain Liam Cooper was able to get back and head his effort off the line after the forward had rounded goalkeeper Robert Green.

The home side had to absorb plenty of first-half pressure but the pace of Hadi Sacko was a thorn in Wednesday’s side all afternoon on the break.

His cross was chested down by Wood late in the half but the strike was blocked well in the box by full-back Jack Hunt.

Moments later, a curled Almen Abdi free-kick from 25 yards out bounced off the top of the Leeds bar with Green flailing, but the sides went into the break level.

Wednesday began the second half well through the skilful link-up play of Barry Bannan and Forestieri, who was now in a left-wing role after Gary Hooper replaced Abdi.

Three of Monk’s 10 summer signings combined 20 minutes into the second half as Sacko’s interplay with Luke Ayling preceded a cross to new striker Marcus Antonsson, who nodded into an empty net.

And as the home side instinctively pushed forward, gaps were left in behind for another new signing, ex-Oxford forward Kemar Roofe, to play a low cross into Chris Wood who slotted in his second goal in as many games to seal the win five minutes from time.

Monk said: “We had a gameplan today and the players followed it pretty much to the letter. This was an important win for the players in terms of their progression. We got three points from two great goals and an excellent performance. We’re still not the team we want to be, but this was a game that showed a real improvement, which is important for the development of our young players.

The former Swansea boss has already been the subject of speculation about losing his job – not helped by his club’s chairman Massimo Cellino sacking six coaches in just over two years at Elland Road.

“We need those little improvements day by day and game by game to get us where we want to be,” Monk added.

“Everyone knows how tough this league is and there will be setbacks, but it’s our level of consistency which will be important.

“We were the better team today. It was an excellent atmosphere and there were many battles in midfield, which are always brought about by derby days. We were really focused on our job today and it was an excellent win.”

Wednesday have now lost two league games in a row and their coach Carlos Carvalhal said: “This is a disappointing result after a good start to the season with the performances against Aston Villa and Norwich. The game was very physical today and although we ran a lot, we didn’t necessarily run properly. “The balance of the squad at the minute is not 100%. Some players are fitter than others after pre-season, but this cannot be an excuse. “We had strong momentum going into the Burton game and we were playing good football, but I think that loss made our confidence and our energy suffer. We wanted the same performance today as we had against Villa and Norwich but it wasn’t the case.

“It was important to score the first goal and although we made a number of chances in the first half, we didn’t do that. We responded well after conceding and created three or four chances, but fell victim to the counter-attack from Leeds.”
