McCarthy gets some Tractor joy from Luke

-

IPSWICH manager Mick McCarthy was delighted with his team’s performance in the narrow win at Hillsborough.

Tom Lawrence and Luke Chambers scored for the Tractor Boys with Gary Hooper replying for the Owls.

Lawrence, on loan from Leicester, put Town in front in the 32nd minute with a fine low finish after a surging run into the penalty area.

Hooper equalised four minutes later, turning home a loose ball after Bartosz Bialkowski could only parry a low shot from David Jones.

Soon after the restart Hooper had a low shot saved by Bialkowski.

But Town captain Chambers headed an 87th-minute winner after Christophe Berra had knocked down Grant Ward’s free-kick.

McCarthy said: “I’m very, very pleased with the performance and happier with the result. I thought we were excellent.

“We caught them on the break a number of times and didn’t really make enough of it until we got the winner.

“That reflects my time at Ipswich. That is more like my team and how I have been.

“I said to Tom before the game that all he needed to cap his performances off was a goal because he’s been excellent for us. It was a terrific goal.

“We’re going into the international break and having a couple of days off and the difference is that I’ll enjoy them now.”

Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal said: “I must accept that we didn’t perform at our level and I hope that will be an exception.

“We were lacking energy and hit a wall. We must be more dynamic.

“Ipswich were very compact and to open up this kind of team we need to move the ball very well and create spaces.

“Our players were not in the same shape they have been in before.

“We didn’t pose a real threat to the opponents but we didn’t deserve to lose the game. We didn’t deserve to win either.

“We have the same points as last season at this moment but we expect to have more.”
