Gundogan’s puzzled by Sergio talk

-

ILKAY GUNDOGAN is baffled by speculation over the future of City hitman Sergio Aguero. The Argentina striker was benched in the Nou Camp last month when Pep Guardiola’s men were given a 4-0 Champions League hammering by Spanish giants Barcelona. And that led some to suggest that his time at the club may be up. But Germany international Gundogan (left) cannot believe doubts are being raised about Aguero’s Etihad future and says that his ‘goal machine’ team-mate is in no hurry to pack any bags. He said: “Sergio’s extremely important for us and I think he’ll stay here. I’ve no doubt about that, so we don’t need to talk about anything else. How good is Sergio? Very good. I’m lucky – I played with Robert Lewandowski and now Aguero. Both are a little bit different.

“Lewandowski, of course, is a bit taller but both are very strong and are able to keep the ball. And Sergio – well, he’s just a goal machine.

“If he has the chances to score them, 90 to 95 per cent of the time he will.

“If you know you have such a player in your team then you know you are always able to score and that you will always create your chances.”

Gundogan proved his own worth to City last week when he netted twice as his side exacted revenge on the Catalans in a memorable 3-1 win at The Etihad.

Aguero (right) was absent from the scoresheet that night but Gundogan added: “While Sergio didn’t score against Barcelona he worked a lot and ran a lot and just tried to keep every ball for us. He’s very important for us.”
