ROWETT IN LUK AS BLUES NAB POINT

-

LUKAS JUTKIEWICZ scored his fifth goal of the season to earn Birmingham a hard-earned away point.

Jutkiewicz, who had a loan spell at Huddersfield as a youngster, cancelled out a goal from Elias Kachunga just four minutes earlier.

The Terriers almost went ahead in the fifth minute when Kachunga’s acrobatic volley from a Kasey Palmer corner was headed over by Ryan Shotton.

Blues keeper Tomasz Kuszczak was then equal to a fierce 20-yard strike from Nahki Wells, while Tommy Smith’s shot from distance was held by Kuszczak.

While Huddersfield were in control in the first half, Birmingham had a breakaway chance in the 25th minute when David Cotterill crossed for Jutkiewicz, who flicked a header just wide.

Wells had another sight of goal in first-half stoppage time but again Kuszczak saved. And the chances kept coming for the hosts after the break with Wells, Jonathan Hogg and Smith all coming close.

Town finally broke the deadlock in the 69th minute when Aaron Mooy spread the play to Smith on the right and from his cross Kachunga reacted first and fired home across Kuszczak and in off the far post.

Wells almost sealed a home win two minutes later with a brilliant 20-yard shot on the turn which struck the bar and went over.

But City salvaged a point in the 73rd minute when Mooy conceded a disputed free-kick just outside the area and Cotterill’s delivery was headed across goal by Jonathan Grounds for Jutkiewicz to head past Danny Ward.

Huddersfield boss David Wagner said: “Sometimes in football you don’t get what you deserve.

“I am not disappointed, more frustrated. I thought we totally deserved the win.”

Birmingham boss Gary Rowett said: “In the second half, I thought we grew into the game and we made two brave attacking substitutions.

“That looked like a very good decision when we scored, but not so good afterwards.”
