JOCKEYS UNITE FOR FREDDY

STARTS WITH THE BEST RACING Support for paralysed rider

-

The Group One winning rider was admitted to hospital after a tumble that led to the abandonment of Kempton’s meeting on Monday.

Medics confirmed late on Friday that the jockey, 30, had suffered a T7 paralysis of the lower body.

Last night a fund-raising page was heading towards the £100,000 mark just hours after being set up by At The Races presenter Matt Chapman.

The amazing response from the racing community came as famous names from the sport pledged to help and support JASON HEAVEY the stricken jockey, who is still in St George’s Hospital, south London.

Tylicki had enjoyed a hugely successful season, claiming his first two Group One wins on Speedy Boarding.

Steve Drowne, who avoided injury when his mount was brought down in the same incident, said: “Freddy is everyone’s friend and loved doing what he was doing and had just had his best year.”

Jockey and pal George Baker added: “It’s devastating.

“We had an idea it wasn’t going to be good news the longer the week went on but when it was finally confirmed it still hit us hard.

“The weighing room is a very sombre place at the moment, we’re all still in shock.

“But I’m sure we’ll all rally around and try to keep his spirits up.”

Paul Struthers, Professional Jockeys Association chief executive, said: “Freddy is one of the most popular members of the weighing room and will not lack for support, with offers already flooding in.

“We are reminded at times like this of how fortunate we are in Britain to have the Injured Jockeys Fund.

“It is the most fantastic charity with first-class rehab facilities and a dedicated, brilliant team that will work tirelessly to support Freddy and his family.”
