Harris hails heroic fans after pitch invasion

-

MILLWALL fans again shamed their club with an unsavoury pitch invasion.

They tried to destroy crossbars while bottles and objects were pelted at Leicester fans who retaliated in kind.

It needed mounted police and an army of officers and stewards to bring everything under control.

But the situation could have been far worse but for the quick thinking of officers.

Millwall fans dragged their glory moment into the gutter and could now face a temporary ground closure.

This is a club that has a dark past and the football authorities will no doubt come down heavy on them.

It soured a great occasion after a late Shaun Cummings goal continued their FA Cup giantkilling act.

Bournemouth and Watford had already been knocked out and now the champions have been turned into fodder.

Millwall boss Neil Harris amazingly praised the fans.

He said: “I thought they were magnificent. They were hostile and this is what we have come to expect at Millwall. They enjoyed the occasion.

“Their voices galvanised the stadium and the team.

“It made for an electric atmosphere. I was in the dressing room when people got on the pitch. I don’t condone what happened but for me over 90 minutes our fans were magnificent.

“Few teams would like to come here now. I don’t think we can win the cup but we will give it a good run.

“We are in the quarter-finals now and who will want to face us here at home?

“The cup has been a big part of this club since 2004 and we love it. When we were down to 10 men I ordered my players to go on the attack. They crowd responded to us. We responded to them.

“I expected fans on the pitch. They were on a high.

“Many Premier League sides will be looking at us and Lincoln and hoping they get us in the next round. We don’t mind who we get.

“There is a quality and spirit in the dressing room and I admit I lost my cool when we scored. We are exceeding all our expectations and feel it is not over yet.

“We thought Leicester might make changes but they did not put out a lot of kids, there were league winners in there. We were underdogs but knew if we gave our all then we had a chance.

“I don’t condone things you have told me that happened but I repeat our fans were magnificent over 90 minutes.”
