Super Nico nabs point for Dean in a snorefest

-

NEITHER side deserved to take three points from a game that was the definition of a bore draw.

Midfielder Emyr Huws gave the home side the lead in the 26th minute, finishing a patient move with a controlled finish.

But that was cancelled out just before the break by Nico Yennaris.

Tractor Boys boss Mick McCarthy felt his side were fortunate to claim a point.

He said: “Brentford were very good while we weren’t particularly good.

“They probably deserved to win in the end.

“But we have played a lot better in the last five matches and deserved more points than we have got.”

The opening 25 minutes saw little action of note in either area with Sergi Canos going closest with a shot which deflected narrowly wide of the near post in the opening few minutes.

It was Ipswich who edged ahead following a fine period of possession.

Tom Lawrence’s cross into the area was brilliantly controlled by Huws and his shot from 10 yards out gave Daniel Bentley no chance.

Brentford almost equalised 10 minutes before half-time when Lasse Vibe latched on to a mistake by Luke Chambers but his goal-bound shot was brilliantly blocked by Christophe Berra.

The visitors did grab an equaliser just before half-time, though, after a great move was matched by a fine finish from Yennaris.

The midfielder was part of an intricate build-up involving Jota and Romaine Sawyers before he met a tasty chip over the Ipswich defence to grab the equaliser.

The second half was particularly forgettable, although Canos went within a whisker of scoring in the 68th minute when his shot was partially blocked by Bartosz Bialkowski and Myles Kenlock hooked clear.

Brentford boss Dean Smith said: “It was a scrappy game but the pitch was slow and bobbly and that doesn’t help with any flowing football.

“Neither goalkeeper was worked as much as they should have been if I am being honest.” Mahrez celebrates as Fuchs draws Leicester level
