We could have died, says Mutiny star Luke

-

MUTINY star Luke Kane claims contestants’ lives were in danger on the reality show. The series saw a group recreate the 4,000-mile journey of Captain William Bligh, who was cast adrift on the Pacific in 1789 following the Mutiny on the Bounty. Trainee GP Luke, 23, said: “I knew the production company and Channel 4 had our safety as the number one priority. But I ED GLEAVE think it would have been really hard for them to have mounted a rescue if we’d been pushed against a reef or the boat capsized. “It would have been very hard to get people out of the water.”

Luke also told how conditions on the voyage were so bad he lost the will to live.

He said: “By the end my body melted away but I wasn’t actually that worried. I was just lying there. I’d just lost that fight to survive.” The crew, which included SAS Who Dares Wins star Ant Middleton, endured wet and cold weather for more than a month of their journey. Luke said: “Our skin started to basically disintegrate. We all started to lose huge amounts of weight. I lost about four stone.

“People’s bodies were shutting down because we didn’t have enough food and we were really dehydrated.

“One guy’s pulse dropped so low. If he’d been in England he would have been put on a cardiac monitor and given IV fluids.” Luke took three months to recover from the horror journey.

He said: “Because I lost so much weight and muscle I couldn’t sit on anything because my pelvis would basically grind into my skin.” In Tuesday’s finale viewers will see the crew attempt the last 1,000 miles to reach remote island Timor in South East Asia.

Luke added: “The show will go out with a bang. The conditions were a nightmare and there was a huge bust-up.”

See the finale on Tuesday at 9pm on Channel 4.
