MILLIONS of us are blissfully unaware that the current £1 coin will be worthless in October. As the new 12-sided £1 coins come into circulation next week, website GoCompare Money reckons Britain has £420million worth of soon-to-be useless currency in jars, piggy banks and glove boxes.

The coins are being introduced to combat fraudsters who have become experts in making counterfeits of the old style currency, costing the UK economy billions.

The Royal Mint is producing 1.5billion of the new coins which will appear in our tills and pockets within days. You will begin to see them on Tuesday.

The Royal Mint told me that the latest £1 is the most secure coin in the world and has features that make it much more difficult to copy.

It has 12 sides, is made from two metals and has a hidden high-security feature built in to protect it from counterfeiting.
