MOYESIE FEELING DOWN

-

SUNDERLAND were relegated to the Championship yesterday – 10 years to the day that they were promoted to the Premier League under Roy Keane.

And Black Cats boss David Moyes said: “This is my worst day in football.”

That is quite a statement considering he was sacked from his dream job at Manchester United after just nine months in the role.

Bournemouth’s 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light, coupled with Southampton’s failure to convert a last-minute penalty against Hull, condemned Sunderland to the drop.

Hull had to better the Black Cats’ result for Sunderland to be relegated and they did that with a 0-0 draw.

Josh King was the hero for Bournemouth, though, after finishing neatly with a low shot into the corner after Ryan Fraser had crossed from the right to seal the hosts’ fate.

Moyes’ future will be determined at the end of the season when he meets club owner Ellis Short and chief executive Martin Bain.

And he said: “Sunderland will bounce back – I’ve no doubt about that.

“The job is to get organised, prepared and ready to try to get Sunderland back into the Premier League.

“I hoped this day would never come around. In this match, we fought right to the end and had four or five decent opportunities to score.

“But overall, we’ve been short of a bit of quality when it mattered.”

There were predictable chants of: “We want Moyesie out” at the end of the game from Sunderland’s lowest crowd of the season – 38,394.

And Moyes added: “I’m disappointed for the fans. They support us in their thousands and travel away in their thousands.”

Black Cats owner Short released a statement after the game which read: “Like any supporter, my initial reaction is one of sadness, disappointment, anger and frustration. It is hard for everyone to take.

“We need to improve, both on and off the field. There is significant work to be done over the summer and when the season is concluded, we intend to share our plans to move forward with our supporters.”
