Rory riled after Elk’s taunt on social media

- by PHIL GIRVAN

RORY McILROY got involved in a Twitter spat with an ex-Major winner after missing another US Open cut.

The Norther n Ir i s hman finished five over par after 36 holes at Erin Hills, meaning he failed to make the weekend by four shots.

And his performance prompted Steve Elkington, winner of the 1995 USPGA Championship, to tweet: “Rory is so bored playiing golf... without Tiger the threshold is prolly 4 majors with 100mill in bank.”

McIlroy could not resist hitting back at t he Australian and posted a picture o f h is career stats along with the words: “More like 200mil...not bad for a “bored” 28 year old... plenty more where t hat c ame from.” That was not the end of the dispute, though, as ‘The Elk’ (above) added: “new (sic) you were a money man.” It was another US Open to forget for McIlroy, who has missed the cut for the second successive year. Over the course of his two rounds in Wisconsin he had eight bogeys and two double bogeys. The four-time Major winner plans to play the Travellers Championship this week before moving on to the Irish and Scottish Opens as he prepares for The Open at Royal Birkdale next month. Among yesterday’s early starters were a number of Major champions. Webb Simpson and Zach Johnson only just made the cut and began their third rounds before 9am local time. Former US Open winner Simpson, tr i umphant a t Olympic Club in 2012, was right on the cut line at one over par and could only s hoot a 7 1 yesterday to stay well down the field. Two-time Major winner Johnson faired better than his compatriot. He had three birdies on the front nine to reach the turn at two under for the tournament. His back nine of 35 meant a third round of 68 and leaves him at three under par. Spanish Ryder Cup star Rafa Cabrera-Bello, out early after opening rounds of 72 and 73, saw an improvement in his game and birdies on two, seven, nine and 14 helped the big hitter to a 71. Stewart Cink, another Major champ, endured a miserable start to his day. He posted a seven on the par-five first before bogeys on the second, third, fourth and 10th.
