The ambush happened in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo on Friday night.

A gang of thugs surrounded vehicles belonging to race teams and fired shots in front of terrified crew members.

One of World Champion Hamilton’s Mercedes mechanics had a gun held to his head, before the crooks made off with “very valuable” items, ahead of today’s Brazilian Grand Prix.

Revealing the drama on Twitter, Hamilton, 32, said: “Some of my team were held up at gunpoint last night leaving the circuit here in Brazil.

“Gun shots fired, gun held at one’s head.

“This is so upsetting.” Calling for greater protection for team staff in the crime-ridden city, the racer added: “This happens every single year here.”

Former F1 driver Jenson Button was the victim of an attempted robbery outside Sao Paulo’s Interlagos circuit in 2010.
