Get ready for hottest July day on record

- ■ by ROBIN COTTLE

BRITAIN is set to see its hottest July day on record this week – as the country enjoys a scorching summer holiday.

Forecasters predict the mercury will reach 37C, beating the current hottest July day ever recorded at 36.7C three years ago.

Bookmakers Ladbrokes cut odds to 5/4 from 3/1 on the record being smashed. Beaches were packed out yesterday as families made the most of England’s schools breaking up for six weeks.

Popular hotspots such as Brighton, Blackpool, Bournemouth and Great Yarmouth were rammed, while day-trippers clogged roads with traffic jams. The hottest day of the year so far saw temperatures of 33C set on June 28 at Porthmadog, north Wales.

And the hot spell is set to last up to two weeks.

The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “Extreme heat is likely.

“Temperatures pushing into the mid-30s are expected, close to July’s temperature record.”

A hosepipe ban is set to see firemen practise with empty hoses, while football pitches could be ruined.

Firefighters in West Sussex did training drills without water to save on the resource during the 2012 ban, the local council said.

All amateur local football, rugby and cricket clubs in the north-west of England will be banned from using sprinklers and hosepipes. Cricket teams will have to prove it will wreck the wicket if not watered.

A United Utilities spokesman said: “Sports grounds are affected by the ban unless hosting a regional, national or international event.” Steven Keates of the Met Office said: “35C is shown on forecast models. The following week looks like further hot weather in the south and east.”
