GINGE A TOUGH NUT TO CRACK

Hannon speedster lands Sprint

- ■ by JASON HEAVEY

GINGER NUT finished with a flourish to give Richard Hannon a second victory in the £250,000 Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury.

The daughter of Sir Prancealot landed a gamble after attracting serious money before the off. She got up close home in the five-furlong event from Bryan Smart’s Moojim. Hannon, who saddled Tiggy Wiggy to victory in the race in 2014, and had seen his father, Richard senior, be successful seven times before, said: “The first few times we went to the races we were a little bit disappointed as she went off too quick. “We tucked her in today. From the moment we purchased her she didn’t have an owner but Chris and Jenny Powell came in and I said this filly would be ideal for the Super Sprint.

“It is great for them as they are big supporters of ours. They are good investors and that is what this race is all about, they have got their payday. She is a very fast filly and it has all gone well.”

On future plans, Hannon, who was completing a big-race double following the success of Yafta in the Hackwood Stakes, said: “There is probably the race at Ayr, the Firth Of Clyde, that normally comes up and there is the St Hugh’s Stakes here at the end of August.”

Emotionless registered his first success for 34 months with a stylish all-the-way win the bet365 Stakes at Newbury.

Things have not gone right for the five-year-old since he won the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster as a two-year-old.

But he showed he was still a talented performer as he outclassed the field.

Trainer Charlie Appleby’s assistant Alex Merriam said: “It was really nice to get back on track. It’s been a little while since he has run in the UK.

“Charlie has been very patient with him.

“He has had little issues off and on that have kept him off the track. A mile and a quarter on quick ground suits and William said that was just the job.”
