WEBB SIMPSON is a sleeping giant who learned his trade at the aptly named Wake Forest College.

Now the man from North Carolina tees up today in the slipstream of fellow Americans Jordan Spieth, Kevin Kisner and Xander Schauffele at the top of the leaderboard.

But 2012 US Open champion Simpson, 32 (below) is confident of catching them napping as he starts the final day on five under after shooting an impressive 67“I’m yesterday. He said: really excited about the challenge. “It gives us situations where we have to be really fully committed to what we’re trying to do.

“We’ll see. The guys are playing great but I’ve always enjoyed it when it’s tougher, when it’s firm.

“And I hear the wind is going to blow a little bit on Sunday.

“Now we’ll go again. This is my seventh or eighth Open Championship and I’ve never seen one bad pin or badly prepared course.

“The pins today were not easy but the leaders made a few birdies coming in.”
