Snow way to avoid a big freeze
BRITAIN is set to shiver in the coldest winter ever with Arctic blizzards blanketing the country in a four-month whiteout.
The chill will start from November when weather from the Atlantic and Arctic collide creating a big freeze right through until February.
But the glum forecast does mean we could see a white Christmas.
James Madden, forecaster for Exacta Weather, said: “There are signs that amidst stormy weather there will be the first proper snowfall. Temperatures are expected to be below average.”
The news has left bookies cutting odds on the coldest winter on record, with Coral’s 2/1 offer bringing a flurry of bets from punters.
A spokesman for the bookmakers said: “We have been fortunate to have a glorious summer, however, it looks like we are not going to get so lucky later in the year.
“The early indications are that we are set for snowfall in November and December, therefore the odds have been slashed for a record cold winter.”
Weather conditions could rival the 2010/11 Big Freeze, inset, which was one of the worst on record.
Expert Madden added: “Long-range projections have been showing for some time that December is likely to be a colder-than-average month.
“We are expecting several widespread snowy periods early in the month.
“The period between Christmas and New Year is looking interesting as there are likely to be some major lowpressure storm systems hitting the UK.
“We are expecting potentially hazardous winter conditions from early on in the season.”
