Barnes: Aguero signing is in league of its own

-

PEP GUARDIOLA has been awarded a perfect 10 by City legend Peter Barnes for tying up Sergio Aguero on a new deal until 2021.

The Argentina striker, 30, who joined The Etihad outfit for £38million from Atletico Madrid seven years ago, is determined to add to his three Premier League titles and hat-trick of League Cups.

And according to Barnes he has to go down as one of the greatest deals of Guardiola’s managerial reign at City.

He said: “For Sergio to renew his contract, it proves the player is very happy and enjoying his time at City, alongside long-term Citizens Vincent Kompany and David Silva.

“The lads obviously love playing for City and for Pep. I’m sure they could have gone elsewhere in their time – but why should they? The way this team have been playing over the last 18 months will surely guarantee they pick up even more medals before they finally pack their bags.”

Aguero’s contract boost came two days after the disappointment of losing to Lyon in the Champions League.

But Barnes believes the elite competition will always be overshadowed by the desire to add to their three Premier League titles.

He added: “City fans are not bothered about the Champions League although the owners desperately want to see the club crowned the best in Europe.

“But for me, it’s always got to be winning the Premier League. We want to be crowned champions year in, year out.” STEVE MILLAR
