GARY: SOLO FLOP GAVE ME BULIMIA

- ■ by ISOBEL DICKINSON ●

SINGER Gary Barlow has revealed he used to make himself sick in his private recording studio at the height of his eating disorder.

The Take That star has revealed how he struggled to cope with the band’s split after his second solo album flopped. He said he was also filled with jealousy that former bandmate Robbie Williams’ career was blossoming.

In his autobiography, Gary says: “I’ve got a recording studio at the back of the house.

“It’s got a bathroom in the farthest corner and that’s where I go to be sick. I go there because it’s the farthest place from our bedroom that I can go.”

The singer, whose weight hit 17st, also tells how he would “chain-smoke, get stoned and eat huge bowls of cereal” after his record label dropped him.

Gary confessed his problems were made worse by Robbie’s success. He said his hits were playing everywhere he went, including at a service station where the workers turned up Angels when it came on the radio.

Gary says: “People spot me across the road and shout, ‘How’s Robbie?’.”

Gary began bingeing so people wouldn’t recognise him in the street, explaining: “I was eating the popstar to death.”

He later shed the weight after meeting diet gurus Melissa and Jasmine Hemsley.

Gary’s memoir, A Better Me: The Official Autobiography, is set for release on October 4.
