ROSE WEST JAIL BAKE Evil killer cooks up storm in lags’ comp
EVIL Rose West has won first prize in a prison bake-off contest.
The serial killer won the competition after baking a Victoria sponge.
The impromptu event took place several weeks ago when inmates in Low Newton Prison’s F-Wing, where West is serving a life sentence, decided to see who could bake the best cake.
The 64-year-old, convicted of ten murders in 1995, came out on top after fellow lags voted her cake the best. Despite being one of the most notorious female murderers in British history, West is allowed to use knives while under staff supervision.
But West, who suffers from breathlessness and high blood pressure, has been warned that she needs to diet or face developing type 2 diabetes and a possible premature death after her weight ballooned to 18 stone.
Sources said that her weight problems began to spiral out of control when it became clear that she would never see freedom.
Although she is described by many within the system as a “model prisoner”, West has struggled to accept her fate.
One source said: “West uses her cooking skills to win people over.
“There are some very violent women on the wing and a lot of them are very aggressive towards West because of her crimes.
“But she tends to defuse situations by offering other prisoners cakes and biscuits.”
Separately, a serving prison officer inside Durham’s Low Newton jail has revealed that morale among staff is in crisis.
One source said: “We have highprofile prisoners in Low Newton like Rose West who need attention. She has been attacked in the past and irrespective of her crimes we have a duty of care to protect her.
“But we are short of staff, morale is low and there is no confidence in prison managers.
“Attacks against staff happen every week and we feel as though we are not properly protected.”
West maintains that she knew nothing of the killings which took place at 25 Cromwell Street in Gloucester between 1973 and 1987 – the house she shared with her husband Fred. He committed suicide in 1995 prior to conviction for his part in at least 12 murders.
Lodgers, babysitters, children, plus strangers picked up off the streets, were tortured before being buried in the cellar or under the patio.
The victims included the couple’s daughter Heather, who was killed in 1987, aged 16.
The Ministry of Justice said that it does not comment on individuals.
