TEARS OF JOY ARE PAUL-ING
PAUL CASEY allowed the tears to pour after delivering his first Ryder Cup point for a decade yesterday in the morning fourballs.
Casey and partner Tyrrell Hatton joined captain Thomas Bjorn in an emotional man hug (below) on the 16th green after clinching victory over Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler – 10 years on from his last Europe appearance.
“I feel over the moon. I desperately wanted to be back on this team because I know how good it is,” said Casey, 41.
“Once you’ve tasted the Ryder Cup, you know there’s nothing like it.
“At my age, in all likelihood, this may be the last European-based Ryder Cup I'll play.
“I didn’t want to just make the team – I wanted to contribute. I’m elated to have got a point. It is emotional.
“I’ve been a bit teary. I’m not embarrassed. I care about it. It means an awful lot to me.
“I’m proud to be on this team and proud to be standing next to my other
11 team-mates and proud to win a point.”
Casey and Hatton played the 16 holes they needed to dispose of the world
No.1 and his partner in a scorching nine under par with the recalled wildcard setting the pace.
“What a player he is. It was the Casey Express train on the front nine. I was just trying to help out when I could,” said Hatton.
