The Blades climbed to the Championship summit with a hard-fought 1-0 win over bottom club Hull – their eighth victory of the season and third in seven days.

And lifelong Blades fan Wilder believes his side are full value for their position.

He said: “It’s a proud moment. We have had a tough schedule but that is pound for pound the best result of the season.

“There are big moments in games and you need them to go your way.

“Dean Henderson makes a brilliant save for his moment and David takes his.

“We are more than happy with the league position and are delighted with 25 points from 12 games.

“Winning games in the Championship, particularly in your second season, is not easy but we have won four on the bounce now.”

The home side asked all the questions in the first half and should have been ahead on 15 minutes. Mark Duffy’s clever pull back found McGoldrick six yards out but the striker hooked over.

Hull rarely threatened Henderson but the keeper, on loan from Manchester United, made the save of the game in the 68th minute as he dived full length to tip away Markus Henriksen’s free header.

United took the lead just two minutes later after Tommy Elphick was guilty of grabbing Jack O’Connell.

McGoldrick sent David Marshall the wrong way for his fifth of the season.

The Tigers dropped to the foot of the table and boss Nigel Adkins admits it has been a tough week.

He said: “We’ve played the top three teams in the past three games and we have to keep the belief going that the points will come.

“It’s not where you want to be in the division but we can’t hide from that.

“The players are grafting and working hard, you have seen that in the three games.

“They are showing a great attitude but it’s fine margins. We have played some really good football but we need to pick up points.”
