Super sub Pett has an instant Imp-act

- By MEL HENDERSON

LINCOLN substitute Tom Pett’s goal secured a 1-0 win against Crewe and kept his side at the top of the table.

Pett (below) struck 60 seconds after coming off the bench.

Exeter stay second after settling for a 2-2 draw at Yeovil. Jayden Stockley’s double for the visitors came either side of goals from Jordan Green and Alex Fisher.

Forest Green extended their unbeaten start after a

1-1 home draw against high-flying Newport. Padraig Amond equalised after Scott Bennett’s own goal had given Forest Green the lead.

Sammie Szmodics gave Colchester an early lead in their

3-1 defeat to Stevenage, who hit back through Kurtis Guthrie, Ben Kennedy and Emmanuel Sonupe.

MK Dons moved up to fourth after a 3-0 home win against Cheltenham. Chuks Aneke, Rhys Healey and Robbie Simpson sealed the points.

Carlisle notched a 3-1 victory at Oldham. Hallam Hope’s header and two quick goals from Ashley Nadesan and Jack Sowerby put the visitors in control before Ishmael Miller’s consolation.

Nicky Maynard’s stoppage-time equaliser clinched Bury a 2-2 home draw against Mansfield.

He cancelled out Danny Rose’s opener and struck his second after the visitors had regained the lead through Matt Preston’s header.

Harvey Gilmour’s double helped Tranmere edge a seven-goal thriller at Morecambe. Rhys Oates fired the home side ahead but Ollie Banks and Gilmour gave the visitors a 2-1 half-time lead. Jon Smith put the visiting side further ahead and although Vadaine Oliver and Ajay LeitchSmith hauled Morecambe level, Gilmour struck in the

89th minute.

Jon Stead’s late penalty was enough to clinch Notts County a 1-0 win at Macclesfield.

Grimsby notched their first home league win of the season thanks to Wes Thomas and JJ Hooper in a 2-0 win over Port Vale.

Matthew Taylor earned Swindon a 1-1 home draw against Northampton, who had taken the lead through John-Joe O’Toole, while Luke Gambin and Ollie Palmer gave Crawley a

2-0 win over Cambridge. GARY ROWETT hailed his Stoke side after they had to adapt their tactics to gain a second victory in a week.

But they enjoyed a huge slice of luck to take the lead and then showed dogged resistance to keep out the high-flying Canaries.

Norwich centre-half Timm Klose put the ball past his own keeper, Tim Krul, when he tried to cut out a low Cuco Martina cross in the 35th minute.

Stoke boss Rowett said: “I’m delighted with the result but it wasn’t part of our gameplan to have so little possession or defend so deep.

“We showed a different side to our game, which we haven’t done very often. It was a concentrated, tactical, defence performance that got us the three points.”

It didn’t bode well for Stoke early on when Benik Afobe got a fifth-minute header all wrong to squander an early chance from close range. Norwich showed more attacking intent and looked dangerous when Marco Stiepermann scooped over from 10 yards.

Jack Butland then tipped over a Jamal Lewis drive.

Krul was hardly worked in the Norwich goal as the Potters sat in and settled for the single goal.

Rowett added: “I thought we would have more energy than Norwich because they had 24 hours less to recover.

“But they showed what a good team they were, although they were unable to break us down. I think they only had two shots on target in the whole 94 minutes.”

Norwich boss Daniel Farke could barely believe the way his side lost their first game in nine.

He said: “I am unbelievably disappointed. It would have been ridiculous had we come away with only one point.

“That was our best home display of the season and I am immensely proud of my lads because that is exactly how I want them to play. Nearly everything was right about the performance. We didn’t give a single chance away.”
