TV VILLAIN: It’s so top secret... I don’t know how I died

-

MILLIONS of viewers are desperate to know how evil Andrew Earlham died – but even the man who played him has no idea.

Ioan Gruffudd is being kept in the dark by writers as he gears up to film another series.

He said: “I’ve read the first episode but obviously even that could change by the time we start shooting.

“The guys who write the show are keeping it all very close to their chest. Even I don’t know what happens. But I have faith in the writers and everyone at ITV, who are big supporters of the show.”

Andrew’s corpse was seen in the closing moments of the first series, but was he murdered or did he take his own life? The twist came after he was exposed as a serial rapist.

But he will still feature in the second series in flashback scenes.

Ioan said: “We’re victims of our own success. After that ending it’s going to be hard to keep up that danger we had when Andrew was lurking around a corner. This time we know what happens to him.”

Ioan faced the toughest role of his career when he signed up to play Andrew. He said: “When you approach a character like this you have to love them even though they do despicable things. “The key was to try to be myself as much as I could even during the episodes where he was doing horrible things because it’s so much more shocking that way. I wasn’t playing him as evil.

“If you were to look at the mind of someone who perpetrates these sort of acts, every aspect of their life will be seemingly normal. But there’s this one sliver that’s just off and horrific.” Before Liar, Ioan was known for playing heroes in films like the Fantastic Four franchise.

He added: “People didn’t want to believe I was that awful person. Even when they saw me physically doing things in the show, they still didn’t want to believe it. I think that’s the power of creating a character that people fall in love with.

“Even when they’re presented with the truth they’re saying, ‘No, I don’t want to believe it’. I was playing this lovely guy. “When you see him being so lovely one second and so despicable the next, people are shocked because they are off guard.”
