DO HIS BIT FOR THREE LIONS
ourselves we need to develop good players with good attributes.”
Puel deserves credit for Chilwell’s continued development as the Frenchman has promoted him ahead of title-winner Christian Fuchs and his judgement has been backed by England boss Gareth Southgate.
The ex-Southampton boss said: “It was a difficult choice to put in Chilly ahead of Christian. He’s an experienced player but I think Ben is the future of the club. Christian is always first into training, I have a lot of respect for him but I had a choice to make.
“After that it is for Gareth. Ben can improve and he will have a lot of competition with young players such as Ryan Bertrand and Luke Shaw but he has ability. He can improve – perhaps to find more clinical crosses – and to support his team-mates going forward.
“But he has fantastic pace, endurance, a good engine, he is comfortable on the ball and doesn’t panic. He’s worked hard at winning his battles in the air and in one-on-one situations. He’s the complete player now.”
Puel also handed West Brom a major boost by confirming another of Leicester’s young English talents – winger Harvey Barnes – will be staying on loan with the Baggies for the rest of the campaign.
Barnes made his debut for the England Under-21s in midweek during a 2-0 victory over Scotland to continue a stunning start to the season in which he has collected five goals.
