A MUM beat incredible odds to give birth to her family’s third consecutive generation of twins.

By having had identical girls Mila and Rosa, Leah Mullins, 36, and husband Michael continued a run dating back to 1955.

Leah and her brother Warren Carratt were the second set of twins born into the family in 1982.

Their dad John Carratt, 63, began the remarkable run when he was born in 1955 alongside his identical twin Mark.

According to experts the chance of it happening is 20,000 to one.

Leah was shocked when she discovered she was going to continue the family trend and have twins.

Mila and Rosa were born just a minute apart in August. They are now being doted on by their extended family who all live within a mile of each other in Sheffield, South Yorks.

Leah, who also has three-year-old daughter Lois, said: “I found out when I was six weeks’ pregnant that I was having twins.

“When the doctor told me I was actually a bit gutted. As crazy as it sounds I just didn’t expect it as I thought the chances of another set of twins in the family was so low.

“It’s definitely hard work having twins but obviously I love my girls with all my heart and I’ve gotten my head around it now.

“When I told my parents it was twins they were so excited. They couldn’t believe it either and they were jumping up and down.

“It’s amazing having them so close as they come over all the time to help me out which is incredible as they have had plenty of experience when it comes to twins.”

Having the third consecutive set of twins in the family isn’t the first incredible odds Leah has beaten.

She and her brother Warren were “superfetation” twins – which means their mum Linda became pregnant with one of them while already expecting the other.

The phenomenon is incredibly rare and according to a 2008 study, there were only 10 known records of it happening globally.

Leah, pictured inset with her babies, added: “Basically my mum got pregnant with me and then three weeks later got pregnant with my brother.” Linda didn’t even know she was carrying twins until she gave birth to Leah and doctors told her she had another baby to deliver.

Leah said: “After we were born the doctors did tests because my brother was smaller than me. They said I was born at 37 weeks and my brother was 34 weeks, meaning I was technically three weeks older.

“Mum couldn’t believe it and I think the doctors were pretty shocked about it too.”

Leah added: “The doctors explained that when you get older and have fewer eggs you can release them a lot quicker which means superfetation can occur.”

The family even appeared on eighties daytime TV talk show Kilroy, hosted by Robert Kilroy Silk, to discuss the phenomenon.

Leah said this year they are planning a huge Christmas at her sister’s house.

She added: “Family get-togethers are definitely going to be a pretty big affair from now on.”
