THE EAT IS ON FOR DOM

Striker has appetite for success

- Simon Bird

DOMINIC CALVERT-LEWIN is eating his way to more goals for Everton and England Under-21s.

The striker has been ordered to scoff MORE to beef up his athletic physique to make him more of a handful for opposition defenders.

The 6ft 2in star says he is still growing and the sports scientists at Goodison want to keep his energy levels high.

He is set to lead the line for England Under-21s against enmark this week and then be part of their bid to add a European Championship to his Under-20s World Cup win.

Then he hopes one-to-one tactics sessions with club boss Marco Silva will pay off and get him more game time and winning goals at Everton, who he joined two years ago from Sheffield United.

Calvert-Lewin, 21, said: “It all stemmed from when I went through a period last season of playing a lot of games around Christmas.

“I became a little bit fatigued after that period, so the dietician looked at what I was intaking.

“I was eating quite a lot at the time and couldn’t eat much more! He said I had to find a way, for energy and things like that.

“Now I feel a lot healthier and better in myself.

“If you looked at a picture of me from last year and pictures of me now you can see the difference.

“That’s from naturally filling out and also working hard in the gym. My diet has remained healthy but I am trying to get more on board now because I find it hard to put on weight.

“I work hard with the nutritionist to try and get calories on board.”

Calvert-Lewin revealed a typical day will involve four meals and a protein shake on top.

He said: “It’s eggs and toast in the mor ning and then probably chicken or fish pasta for lunch, a protein shake after training, chicken wraps in the afternoon and then a similar dinner to my lunch.

“The athletic side is a large part of my game, so I look to try and build on that and physically impose myself on the game.”

England will have to overcome Italy, Spain, France and Germany next summer. The draw takes place on Friday.

And Calvert-Lewin says England are ready to put down a marker at Under-21s level after several tournament near misses. He says Aidy Boothroyd’s squad have the belief to go all the way.

He said: “You have to look at the biggest trophy you can win through the age groups and this is the biggest one.

“This is what we are training for two years for, to try and compete and achieve the win, so it is the biggest one.

“I don’t think it’s an expectation to go there and win, it’s more a belief in our own ability that we can go there and win it.

“The players we have in the team are all playing first-team football now and are exposed to a high level.

“You would like to think that would help us going into the tournament.

“It’s not about us being over-confident but we’re confident in what we’ve got.”
