ONE of the big movies of next summer will be Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, Hollywood’s live action take on the creature hunting game.

But fans can whet their appetites with this endearing Japanese animated adventure for plucky trainer Ash and his squeaky best pal. If you’re new to this bizarre world you may need a crash course. Pokémon are mystical creatures with special fighting skills who form bonds with the humans who catch them.

The new film, a follow-up to last year’s I Choose You!, takes place in Frau City. In this coastal resort locals with multicoloured hair hold a festival to celebrate a Lugia, an ancient flying pokémon who once saved the city from an energy crisis by supplying the wind for their turbines.

But the festival is thrown into chaos when a gang of nasty pokémon hunters accidentally release a cloud of toxic gas. Ash and Pikachu must team up with a rookie hunter called Risa, compulsive liar Callahan and nervy scientist Toren.

The animation looks a little jerky but Tesuo Yajima is a confident storyteller who knows how to weave several stories into an entertaining over-arching tale about teamwork and friendship.
