GOLDEN GIRLS WANTED

-

GLASTONBURY bosses are struggling to sign female singers for next year’s festival, according to insiders.

Organisers Michael and Emily Eavis said 2019 was supposed to be the year where more women played the festival than ever before.

But so far they have only confirmed a male headliner –

Stormzy.

Emily revealed:

“I am doing my best to get more women on the bill.

“It’s been such a battle this one and it’s a really personal one for me – the live music industry is pretty much dominated by men.

“A lot of it has been wrestling older men who were booking some of the stages who just haven’t seen it change.

“It’s hard to change their thought process into it being a priority.

“That’s interesting and we have quite open conversations about them not doing it.

“If they are not doing it, I will just put women on their stages.”

Things are progressing though. She added: “When I was growing up it was always blokes.

“But there are a few women and there are more now. There are more agents coming through and I have seen it transition into many more women.

“Most people are really on board and we are really increasing. On the Park Stage last year we were 50/50.

“That was great. It’s harder with the main Pyramid Stage as there just aren’t enough females at the moment to be headlining on the Pyramid Stage. “We are really, really trying.” I told you earlier this year that Kylie, Lady Gaga, Dua Lipa, Ellie Goulding, Patti Smith, Jorja Smith, plus female-fronted band Wolf Alice were all being touted. But the real problem according to the Eavis family is a lack of big female names.

Emily agreed: “It’s the smaller pool – that’s the problem.

“But I think the really good thing to come out of people pushing it is that the pool is going to get bigger. “We won’t be in this situation in five years’ time and there will be a much bigger pool to choose from.”
