Curran won’t be right for last Test

- ■ by DEAN WILSON

NO RISKS: Sam Curran ENGLAND are set to be forced into making at least one change for the final Test in Colombo whatever the result in Kandy.

Surrey seam bowling all-rounder Sam Curran, 20, did not take the field for England on day four owing to what the ECB described as “discomfort in his right side”.

Curran will be sent for a scan on the area once the team arrive in the capital but it is clear that they are not keen on risking a youngster who has had big demands on his body this year.

And while the injury is not being described as a fully blown side strain just yet, it may be better to let the area heal without risking the chance of it becoming one judging from previous experience.

Chris Woakes (right) knows just how tough it can be after missing being forced out of the Champions Trophy with a side injury in 2017 that also flared up to rule him out of the Sydney Ashes Test in January.

Woakes will be one of several players who would come into the reckoning to replace Curran in Colombo with Stuart Broad also waiting in the wings for a game.

However England must surely turn their attentions to out-and-out pace merchant Olly Stone if they want to bring in a bowler because he is the one player they are yet to find out about.

If England leave Kandy with a series-winning result then Stone is the obvious option to see just how much his pace can unsettle players on surfaces that don’t offer much movement.
