DON’T DITCH JOSE!

There is no better boss SAYS HIS FORMER PLAYER BENNI McCARTHY

- ■ by STEVEN BEACOM

BENNI McCARTHY insists it would be foolish for Manchester United to sack his former manager Jose Mourinho.

McCarthy won the Champions League with Mourinho at Porto in 2004 and still believes that the Portuguese is one of the best bosses in the business.

The South African (below) now in charge of Cape Town City, is confident Mourinho has the personality to deal with United falling way behind Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea this season and the character to ensure the

Old Trafford outfit hit back.

The former Blackburn and

West Ham striker added, however, that the ex-Chelsea and Real Madrid supremo has to accept younger players in the modern era need their egos stroking more than in the past.

“Sometimes in life you are going to hit downers and Jose has had that this season but 100 per cent he will come back up again,” said McCarthy.

“Manchester United should not get rid of someone I think is one of the best managers around. Who do they replace him with? I don’t think there are better managers out there than Mourinho.

“He’s got the personality and the character to deal with this. For me he is the best manager for Manchester United.

“He might just need to understand that times have changed and he needs to stroke players’ egos at times a little bit and accept that younger players need a bit more loving and caring. “He is not the type to stroke anyone’s ego as he believes that you have to go out there and perform like a professional as you are paid a lot of money and it is your job and you have to deliver the best at all times. “From a personal point of view, Jose had the biggest impact on me. He was the kind of man that I wanted to become. “How he was with his players and man management skills was second to none. As a footballing coach tactically you couldn’t describe how good he was.

“On tactics alone, he could win the game without even having to kick a ball. He was that in depth in how he wanted us to play. I will always be grateful to him.”

Having completed his Pro Licence Coaching course with the Irish FA in Northern Ireland, McCarthy’s dream is to one day manage in the English Premier League.

“That’s the ultimate ambition. That’s what you prepare yourself for one day. You want to test yourself against the best and the best you are going to find is in the Premier League like it was when I was a player,” said McCarthy.

“When you play in the Premier League you come up against the best players in England and some of the best players in the world and now it is the managers like Mourinho, Guardiola and Klopp.

“That is the ultimate test where you want to be and go up against those guys and see how far we can raise the bar.

“Getting my Pro Licence is one of my biggest achievements. As a player I never thought I would go down this road and be a coach but now I really enjoy it.”
