Riot cops fight fuel rise mob

- ■ by FELICITY CROSS

PROTESTERS clashed with riot police in Paris during marches against rising fuel prices.

Water cannons and tear gas were used against thousands of French “Yellow Vest” protesters as the Champs Elysees turned into a battlefield.

The campaigners, near the Arc de Triomphe, called for President Emmanuel Macron to resign.

A police officer said: “Hooded demonstrators were determined to cause trouble.

“We’ve been forced to deploy a water cannon and use tear gas.

“They’re breaking up traffic obstacles to create missiles to throw at us. It’s getting very violent.”

Two road deaths have been linked with the demos so far – both at illegal road blocks set up by the Yellow Vests.

There have also been 553 woundings.
