Pompey Nayl down top spot with win

- By Steve Millar

TOM NAYLOR and Gareth Evans were on target as Portsmouth held on for a 2-1 win over Scunthorpe to move four points clear at the top.

Sunderland, in second, lost ground on the leaders but battled back from 2-0 down with 10 men to claim a dramatic last-gasp 2-2 draw at Walsall.

The Black Cats had Max Power sent off for a third time this season before falling behind to goals from Josh Gordon and Josh Ginnelly.

Aiden McGeady began the fightback just after the hour before Lynden Gooch grabbed their dramatic equaliser in the 89th minute.

Barnsley moved up to third on goal difference after drawing 1-1 with Doncaster at Oakwell, with Cauley Woodrow cancelling out Herbie Kane’s opener.

Luton were 3-1 winners at Gillingham. Andrew Shinnie and a second-half double from Elliot Lee put the game beyond the hosts, while Tom Eaves scored for the Gills.

Bottom side Bradford claimed their first victory since October with a 2-0 triumph over Oxford.

David Ball and Jack Payne scored in the space of three minutes midway through the first half. AFC Wimbledon ended an eight-game losing streak by beating Southend 2-1 thanks to goals from Deji Oshilaja and Mitch Pinnock.

Freddie Ladapo struck twice as Plymouth beat Fleetwood 2-1.

The other side in the bottom four, Bristol Rovers, were beaten

3-1 at Charlton. Jamie Ward, Joe Aribo (left) and Karlan AhearneGrant netted for the Addicks, with Joe Martin on target for Rovers. Wycombe came from behind to beat Shrewsbury

3-2. Aaron Holloway scored inside four minutes for the Shrews at Adams Park but the hosts hit back through Adam El-Abd, Joe Jacobson and Alex Samuel.

Fejiri Okenabirhie ensured a tight finish with a second Shrews goal on

73 minutes but it proved to be mere consolation.

Armand Gnanduillet, Jordan Thompson and Joe Dodoo fired Blackpool to a 3-0 win over Burton, while Ian Henderson’s header earned Rochdale a 1-0 victory over Accrington Stanley.

ELLAND ROAD went through the Roofe as Leeds United picked up their Premier League promotion push.

Kemar Roofe sent his side on their way to victory with a 69th-minute strike to help wipe out the bitter memory of their hammering at West Brom in their previous game.

And then Pablo Hernandez – who played a huge role in the opener – scored himself three minutes from time to send a packed house home in ecstatic mood.

Spaniard Hernandez was later saluted for his “influence” by delighted manager Marcelo Bielsa as his Yorkshire heavyweights kept the Championship pace-setters Norwich well within their sights.

Bristol City will point to the 55th-minute sending off of Josh Brownhill for two yellow cards – the first early bath of his career – as the turning point of the game. They were holding their own until that point and Leeds boss Bielsa admitted it was a major flashpoint in the contest.

The Argentine said: “The fact we played with one more player made it easy for us. It’s difficult to think that we deserved to lose the game. We dominated for long parts.

“I could see that we virtually didn’t concede any chances to the opposition.”

Bielsa had special praise for game-changer Hernandez. “Pablo is always a player with a lot of influence,” he said. “He always improves the style of our team and when he scores goals he’s even more important.”

His opposite number, Lee Johnson, left Yorkshire cursing his side’s bad luck in having Brownhill dismissed.

But he believed his Bristol City players could journey back to the West Country with their heads held high despite sinking to a fourth straight defeat.

Johnson said: “We were looking like a side which was going to win the game. I was very pleased with the performance.

“Our shape was good. We hustled. We harried. And it was important we got our identity back.

“The back four worked extremely hard. The individuals will go away knowing that they will have got their game back.

“Leeds are a good side but we nullified them
