Cops face off mob on streets of Paris

Daily Star Sunday - - FRONT PAGE -

CROWDS of yellow-vest protesters clashed with police yesterday as they tried to reach the presidential palace in Paris.

Riot cops fired tear gas amid a huge security operation aimed at preventing a repeat of last week’s violence over fuel tax rises.

Armoured vehicles and police with shields blocked the Champs-Elysees.

A ring of steel surrounded the Elysee Palace as steel barriers were set up across the city.

The Eiffel Tower and Louvre Museum were closed amid fears of damage after rioting and looting last Saturday that saw 130 people injured.

By noon more than 500 had been detained but no injuries were reported.

Protesters also blocked roads, roundabouts and tollbooths in other cities.
