BAND EYE ROLE IN SONG CONTEST

- Grace Chatto ABBA Elton John

CLEAN Bandit will have to get used to “nul points” if their next project comes off.

The band, back in the Top 10 with second album What Is Love?, dream of landing a Eurovision smash.

But rather than helping the UK get over its Eurovision slumber they are eyeing a politically contentious rival.

told me: “We have never been approached to do Eurovision but it could be rather interesting.

“I would like to write one for Russia or something. That would be fun.”

I’m sure President Putin would be delighted to have a British band help promote his nation’s musical talent.

It’s no wonder Clean Bandit are partial to a bit of Eurovision, after all they are huge nuts. And they can’t wait to see the super Swedes make their comeback with new music and a hologram tour in 2019.

Ahead of Clean Bandit’s appearance at Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball in London today, Grace gushed: “I was so excited when they announced new songs, I’m a massive ABBA fan. That was a great day.”

Ever busy, the group also told me earlier this year they were working on music for a sitcom and hope to write a musical as well.

And they still want to finish their long-mooted collaboration which failed to make the latest album.

Referring to the Piano Man’s farewell tour, Grace added: “I didn’t know Elton was retiring, I’ve been out of the loop.

“I hope we get to finish our song with him before then, we started it a long time ago. He’s such an amazing musician. The longevity of his career is so inspirational. We are such fans of his music.” What Is Love? already contains three No1 singles plus three other hits. But Clean Bandit believe they have only just discovered their perfect sound.

Grace explained: “We are always throwing back to the 1990s – subliminally, not deliberately.

“I think we really hit upon something with Rockabye – a lot of the songs on this album are in that Rockabye world.

“This is the first time we have used guitar like this. We have been writing a few songs over the last couple of months with guitar.”

So after Eurovision, perhaps we can look forward to that heavy metal Clean Bandit LP.
