Rocket’s shock at top spot

- SNOOKER

RONNIE O’SULLIVAN admits it is a “miracle” he has a chance of reclaiming the world No.1 spot for the first time in nine years.

The Rocket, 43, is bidding for a record eighth Masters title at Alexandra Palace.

The world No.3 has played only five events so far this season while some rivals are in double figures.

But a great strike rate has seen him pocket more than £500,000 with three titles, a final and a semi.

O’Sullivan, an ambassador for Eurosport who faces Stuart Bingham tomorrow, said: “I think it’s a miracle I am even in contention to be No.1 again.

“Somebody there must be tweaking it in my favour because I’ve hardly played events and I’m still up there.

“It must be because the events I have played in I’ve been lucky and I’ve won.”

O’Sullivan has made the Masters almost personal property – winning six titles in 14 years. But in a shock revelation he said: “I don’t really like it. It comes at a funny time right after Christmas, after you’ve had a break.

“The tournament after The Masters is always nice because you’ve broken that festive period if you like.

“But I will give it a good go and we’ll see what happens.”
