Waites is Unter the radar

- DARTS

SCOTT WAITES booked his place in today’s final of the BDO World Darts Championships with a

6-1 defeat of Germany’s Michael Unterbuchner – and vowed to raise his game.

Waites, world champ in 2013 and 2016, made sure his doubles counted as he moved into a 5-0 lead by dropping only four legs.

Unterbuchner then won the sixth set 3-1 before Waites took the next by the same score to seal victory in the semi-final, landing double

18 for glory.

He said: “I am happy to get through but I would rather play better than that and I will do tomorrow.

“That was such a strange game as neither of us got into it properly.

“Sometimes you have to just battle your way through it and take your chances when they come.

“That was the only difference today. I took my chance and he didn’t.”

Mikuru Suzuki created history when she became the first Japanese player to win a darts World Championship as she beat Lorraine Winstanley

3-0 in the women’s final. Suzuki triumphed on double top, had an average of 90 and said: “I just wanted to play my best game.”
