Saints debutant Kyle Walker-Peters before unleashing a ferocious drive that left goalkeeper Alex McCarthy with no chance.

A delighted Dyche said: “You need big moments to win games sometimes and that was a big moment in a tight game.

“Vyds has stuck at it and he does do as well as many other players when they’re not in the side.

Vydra had started the game as a substitute but came on when leading goalscorer Chris Wood limped off midway through the first half with a hamstring injury.

Southampto­n striker Danny Ings was supposed to be defending the near post when Westwood (right, with Vydra) swung in a corner inside two minutes and for some reason the England hopeful turned sideways to let the ball through.

Presumably he thought it would hit the side netting but instead it curled nicely inside the post.

McCarthy tried to claw the ball out but it was too late.
