Simpsons’ Apu finds new voice
CONTROVERSIAL cartoon shopkeeper Apu will not be axed by The Simpsons – despite actor Hank Azaria stepping down from providing his voice.
The Indian character was accused of being “a problematic stereotype of South Asian people” in a documentary by comedian Hari Kondabolu.
But veteran show designer Lance Wilder revealed at the Movie Guide Awards in LA that the character will live on – and departing Azaria has given his blessing.
He said: “I briefly heard Hank Azaria saying, if they wanted, to get somebody that fit the role and everybody agreed to that.
“I am sure a wonderful person could fit the role.”
