GAMES JAMES MAKE YOUR PLAY FOR BOX FULL OF HISTORY

-

How do you fancy owning a piece of video game history? Now you can, because a one-of-a-kind Nintendo PlayStation has gone on sale at auction, with bids currently at some £230,000. If you’re baffled as to why it should cost so much, let me explain the history behind what is arguably one of the most famous prototypes ever built.

The Nintendo PlayStation is a real console, not some dodgy knock-off you might find down at a car boot sale. Back in 1991, Sony and Nintendo planned to release a machine which combined a Super Nintendo cartridge console with Sony’s then-revolutionary CD-ROM.

But there was a huge fallout between the firms, eventually leading to Sony releasing their own standalone PlayStation years later.

Just 200 prototypes were made and it was thought they were all destroyed after the Nintendo deal went south.

But one escaped and was found in a box of junk in an attic in 2015.

Five years on, it has finally found its way to auction.

If you’re thinking of putting in a bid, be warned that the current highest bidder is

Oculus VR founder and Oculus Rift designer Palmer Luckey – a man with very deep pockets and money to burn.

On the upside, if you do win you’ll find it’s more than just a paperweight as we’re told it’s working.

The people over at Heritage Auctions have even played a few games of Mortal Kombat on it!
