Screen test for our refs

FORMER referee David Elleray says he would be “astonished” if Premier League officials aren’t forced to use pitchside monitors next season.

Elleray, now a technical director with the International FA Board, made his views known after the IFAB’s annual meeting in Belfast yesterday.

He said: “I would be astonished if it remained as it was next season.

“On average, 75 per cent of reviews are on-field reviews, going to the pitchside monitor, so any competition that is significantly outside 75 per cent is clearly out of step.”

While Premier League referees are likely to be mandated to use pitchside monitors for the 2020-21 campaign, the change won’t be phased in before.

Another former referee, Pierluigi Collina, now chair of FIFA’s referees’ committee, said a lack of pitchside reviews in England is problematic.

He said: “Seventy-five per cent of decisions in other countries are video review, so if we have another country with 55, 60 or 53, it is not a problem. If it is zero, it is.” there. It’s important for us to win this game to keep going up the table,” added the forward, who scored in both games against Spurs in the last campaign.

Jimenez’s exploits in the Black Country aren’t going unnoticed back home in Mexico – he has 3.3 million Twitter followers, seven times the number of the Wolves official account!

He believes clinching a place amongst Europe’s finest in the Champions League isn’t the distant dream it once was.

Jimenez added: “It’s a very big step for the club because 18 months ago this club was in the Championship and now we’re fighting to be in the Champions League.

“We know that we have to be proud of ourselves because we are fighting for that and it is achievable.

“Yes, it’s a very big dream for us. I think we deserve that because we’ve been working hard and playing very good football so let’s see what happens.”
