SHEEDY’S GOT GREAT FAITH IN ANCELOTTI

- By DAVID SNEYD

KEVIN SHEEDY was part of the last great Everton team and hopes to see the next one develop sooner rather than later.

The former wing wizard won two First Division titles in the 1980s during a period when the blue half of Merseyside not only ruled in their own city but also the whole of England.

But the last piece of silverware to rest in the Goodison Park cabinet was the FA Cup, which was lifted by Dave Watson after beating Manchester United

1-0 25 years ago. Against the same opponents today, an away win will take Everton to within two points of the Old Trafford giants.

And Sheedy, 60, is hopeful the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti (below) can herald a revival that has been decades in the making.

“A club like Everton have waited too long to win a major trophy,” he said.

“Everton supporters have not seen any success for

25 years and there is a younger generation now for whom winning any trophy would be great.

“There can be a lot more optimism now with a manager like Ancelotti.

“He is a serial winner and you hope that things will only get better under him when he has time to gel the team to how he wants.

“He will also look to who he wants in it going forward but I think Everton can look to a bright future now.”

Sheedy has also paid tribute to Seamus Coleman and his determination to succeed at Everton.

He was Toffees academy manager when the right-back arrived as a

£60,000 signing from Sligo Rovers just over a decade ago and sees the Donegal native as a key component of what is to come.

Sheedy added: “He is always a model pro and he was one of those players that I told the lads in the academy to look up to.

“I took them to see what he was like on the training pitch, how he treated people and behaved.

“He had the mentality and desire to be a professional. Someone with his experience and professionalism, the attitude he has every day, he should be a major part of the team.”
