Danny will not take Karlan for Grant-ed

- LIZ BYRNE By Harry Pratt

TERRIERS boss Danny Cowley praised Karlan Grant after he scored two well-taken goals against his former club.

Grant pounced on a dreadful defensive mistake by Deji Oshilaja to fire home the opener.

Then Steve Mounie doubled the lead, chesting the ball home seconds after coming on as a substitute.

Grant got his second after being played in by Juninho Bacuna, who claimed a superb goal of his own as he fired home from distance in added time.

The striker – who spent four-and-a-half years at The Valley before joining Town in January 2019 – now has three in two games and 16 for the season.

It leaves the Terriers 17th, five points above the relegation zone and Cowley singled out Grant for praise.

He said: “He’s always able to play 90 minutes and credit to him because he’s got a real hunger to do that.

“Not all of your attacking players can do that physically or mentally but he can. And he got his rewards today which is really pleasing because of all his endeavour.”

The win was the biggest since Cowley was appointed in September and Huddersfield’s first back-to-back victories since November following Tuesday’s win over Bristol City.

Charlton boss Lee Bowyer said he learned a lot about his team who are two points above the drop zone.

He said: “You’re going to need men out there to fight for you because it’s going to be a tough run-in for everybody who is in and around it.

“I like to think that it’s going to give them a kick up the backside.”

JARROD BOWEN finally won a Premier League game at the 10th time of asking and received glowing praise from West Ham boss David Moyes.

The ex-Hull hitman has been no more than a fringe contributor to the struggling Londoners’ cause since his £18million arrival in January.

But yesterday Moyes finally let him off the leash – and was rewarded with Bowen marking his full debut with a beautifully taken opener.

That was the spark for this vital victory over Southampton, with further efforts from Sebastien Haller and Michail Antonio breathing new life into West Ham’s relegation scrap.

The standing ovation Bowen received from all corners of an unusually buoyant London Stadium when subbed in the 78th minute said everything about his electric display.

Little wonder Moyes was so chuffed with the forward, whose previous nine top-flight career appearances had all ended in defeat.

The Irons boss, with a first win in nine lifting his side out of the drop zone, said: “Jarrod scored a great goal. For his opening full debut, he did very well.

“I hope this shows I know a little bit about bringing a boy through and picking the right moment to play him.

“I don’t want him to be the one under pressure. There are games that’ll suit him and some that won’t.

“Today was always going to be his chance.

We’re trying to get a top Premier League player for the next seven years. There has to be a bit of time that goes towards his development.”

Bowen was equally thrilled with his exploits and said: “I think that’s the way it went in my dreams last night.”

Moyes’ frontline of Bowen, Haller and Antonio was brave and adventurous – and underlined that nothing less than maximum points would suffice.

Having come close to upsetting Liverpool in the Premier League last Monday, there was a new sense of optimism around the place.

That was evident as they went for Saints’ jugular from the off – a show of intent which was welcomed by the crowd.

Just like Moyes wanted – a united front on the pitch and in the stands.

That was part one his masterplan sorted.
